DESCRIPTION:

Jon Padgett's The Secret of Ventriloquism, named the Best Fiction Book of 2016 by Rue Morgue Magazine, heralds the arrival of a significant new literary talent. With themes reminiscent of Shirley Jackson, Thomas Ligotti, and Bruno Schulz, but with a strikingly unique vision, Padgett's work explores the mystery of human suffering, the agony of personal existence, and the ghastly means by which someone might achieve salvation from both. A bullied child seeks vengeance within a bed's hollow box spring. A lucid dreamer is haunted by an impossible house. A dummy reveals its own anatomy in 20 simple steps. A stuttering librarian holds the key to a mill town's unspeakable secrets. A commuter's worldview is shattered by two words printed on a cardboard sign. An aspiring ventriloquist spends a little too much time looking at himself in a mirror. And a presence speaks through them all.

DESCRIPTION:

With one look at her you would think that Cera Singer from Saraland, Alabama is your typical teenage girl from a rural Southern Gulf town. That is, she faces all the problems you would expect a seventeen-year-old would face; boys, drugs, fitting in, her upcoming senior year, and on top of that getting her first car on the road. But what Cera doesn't know yet is what will ultimately set Cera apart from all the other girls her age. Cera is a witch.

In this supernatural thriller, you'll be taken along as Cera recounts her experiences in her memoir of how she discovered that the women in her mama's family lineage were actually a long line of witches responsible for the protection of her new home and community. As Cera writes she will explain to you how her honest curiosity along with her rebellious, down-to-earth nature quickly got her into more than she could handle, mentally and physically, as she uncovers the many deep and well-hidden layers in her relationships with her mother and grandmother.

Synopsis:

After the BP Deepwater Horizon oil spill shut down the fishing industry in the Gulf causing Cera's Step Daddy Cade to lose his job, Cera and her parents find themselves in dire straits when they learn that their local bank is planning to foreclose on their home. Now just when Murphy's Law seems to be at its all time worst for Cera and her family, news comes that Cera's grandmother, Lyanna Barrett, has passed. But soon, Cera and her family quickly find out her passing isn't all bad news. In an inheritance letter that Cera's mama (Janine) receives in the weeks that follow her mother's death, she is informed that she is to receive all of her mother's assets which are to include a house in New York, a new Cadillac, and a substantial amount of cold, hard cash.

Reluctant to leave Saraland and move back to New York, Cera's mama is torn but sees no other option other than accepting the inheritance that her mother bequeathed to her and make a fresh start back in her place of birth, Mount Harrison.

After arriving in Mt. Harrison, a picturesque, little Western New York village nestled in a valley below the forest covered mountain from which it gets its name--Cera quickly comes to the understanding as to why her mama, at age eighteen, had elected to run away from her home and head for the Deep South.

Nearly all the village's residence, acting under a curse put upon them by Abellona Abbott (a three hundred-year-old witch that still resides in the forest atop Mt. Harrison and takes the embodiment of her teenage former self) treats Cera and her mama with utter contempt for bringing the Barrett blood line back into the village and thereby angering Abellona Abbott even further because of a grudge the witch still carries against the Barrett family that stretches back to the time of her death.

As Cera and her family try their best to settle into their new home and community, Cera immediately finds out, even before her very first day at her new school, that she along with her mama are not going to be welcomed in their new village which quickly becomes evident to Cera by the lack of acceptance she receives from several of her new classmates and her neighbor's disdainful attitudes towards her and her family.

If Cera hopes to survive her senior year of high school, then together with the help of another village outcast named Katelyn, she has to piece together her family's history in Mt. Harrison in connection with Abellona Abbott, and quickly develop her newly found magic skills before it's too late.

A Bram Stoker Award finalist for Best First Novel: This endlessly inventive thriller pays homage to 1950s Hollywood horror films—with a demonic twist

Schlock horror director Landis Woodley lives in a decaying mansion in the Hollywood Hills. When he abandoned the movie business—after being reduced to filming skin flicks and peep shows—he also left a laundry list of enemies, including the IRS. But avid fan Clint Stockbern is determined to write a piece on the alcoholic recluse for Monster magazine. Woodley agrees to the interview—for $600 in cash.

As the tape recorder starts rolling, Stockbern travels back in time with Woodley. He hears recollections of Attack of the Haunted Saucer, the worst movie of all time, and Blood Ghouls of Malibu. But he really wants to know about Woodley’s masterpiece, Cadaver. Shot on location in the Los Angeles County morgue, the film was rumored to have used real corpses and everyone associated with the production has been fatally haunted since its 1957 release. But the truth is far more terrifying than Stockbern imagined. Is a dead Satanist, possessed by the devil, reaching out beyond the grave? Or is the reporter the final victim in a diabolical scheme dreamed up by mortals?

Horror Show is a wild and wacky romp that sends up mid-century Hollywood horror movies and schlockmeisters Roger Corman, William Castle, and Ed Wood.

From Adam Howe, winner of Stephen King's On Writing contest, come three original novellas of hardboiled crime, graphic horror and pitch-black gallows humor.

DAMN DIRTY APES

Washed-up prizefighter Reggie Levine is eking a living as a strip club bouncer when he's offered an unlikely shot at redemption. The Bigelow Skunk Ape – a mythical creature said to haunt the local woods – has kidnapped the high school football mascot, Boogaloo Baboon. Now it's up to Reggie to lead a misfit posse including a plucky stripper, the town drunk, and legend-in-his-own-mind skunk ape hunter Jameson T. Salisbury. Their mission: Slay the beast and rescue their friend. But not everything is as it seems, and as our heroes venture deeper into the heart of darkness, they will discover worse things waiting in the woods than just the Bigelow Skunk Ape. The story the Society for the Preservation of the North American Skunk Ape tried to ban; Damn Dirty Apes mixes Roadhouse with Jaws with Sons of Anarchy, to create a rollicking romp of 80s-style action/adventure, creature horror and pitch-black comedy.

DIE DOG OR EAT THE HATCHET

Escaped mental patient Terrence Hingle, the butcher of five sorority sisters at the Kappa Pi Massacre, kidnaps timid diner waitress Tilly Mulvehill and bolts for the border. Forcing his hostage to drive him out of town, it's just a question of time before Tilly becomes the next victim in Hingle's latest killing spree. But when they stop for gas at a rural filling station operated by deranged twin brothers, Dwayne and Dwight Ritter, the tables are turned on Hingle, and for Tilly the night becomes a hellish cat-and-mouse ordeal of terror and depravity. The meat in a maniac sandwich, Tilly is forced against her nature to make a stand and fight for survival. Because sometimes the only choice you have is to do or die…to Die Dog Or Eat The Hatchet. Reading like a retro slasher flick, this pulpy Southern Gothic kidnap-thriller takes no prisoners as it roars towards a shattering conclusion.

GATOR BAIT

Prohibition-era 1930s… After an affair with the wrong man's wife, seedy piano player Smitty Three Fingers flees the city and finds himself tinkling the ivories at a Louisiana honky-tonk owned by vicious bootlegger Horace Croker and his trophy wife, Grace. Folks come to The Grinnin' Gator for the liquor and burlesque girls, but they keep coming back for Big George, the giant alligator Croker keeps in the pond out back. Croker is rumored to have fed ex-wives and enemies to his pet, so when Smitty and Grace embark on a torrid affair…what could possibly go wrong? Inspired by true events, Gator Bait mixes hardboiled crime (James M. Cain's The Postman Always Rings Twice) with creature horror (Tobe Hooper's Eaten Alive) to create a riveting tale of suspense.
EDITORIAL REVIEWS
"Whether you call it Splatterpulp or Punk-Noir, Die Dog is an out-of-control '46 Mercury coupe heading hell-bent for Dead Man's Curve without brakes; a velvet-swathed lead slapjack to the base of the skull; a hard kick in the balls from a twisted, homicidal clown with giant shoes wrapped in razor-wire. It's an explicit, hard-hitting, twisted funhouse ride into pulpish horror wrapped loosely in a tattered skein of irreverent, jet black humor. In short, it's a freakin' blast." --Walt Hicks, author of Dirge of the Forgotten

"Adam Howe's skill with hilarious dialogue makes reading Damn Dirty Apes a laugh-out-loud experience, keeping you turning pages until the end and eliciting snickers from memory long after the story's over. Filled with brutality, atmosphere, and surprising depth, it's an absurd tale that explores not just the American south's backwoods in all its sticky, smelly grandeur, but also the all-too human yearning for stardom, even greatness." --David Dubrow, author of The Blessed Man and the Witch

"Neo-noir at its very best. The first thing you'll do when you finish Gator Bait, is read it again." --Zombie Rob at The Slaughtered Bird

DESCRIPTION:

"Don't read this one before you go to bed. And if you do, leave the lights on."--Hill Rag Magazine

The Demon Stone is a powerful supernatural thriller that leads you from the killing fields of Africa to the quiet Boundary Waters of Northern Minnesota. In braided narratives, Datta spins a terrifying story about the spiritual forces--both real and supernatural--that incite the basest, bloodiest and most frightening of human behaviors.

When Kevin volunteered to travel to a war-ravaged country in Africa to help out his childhood buddy, Bill, now a physician with Doctors Without Borders, he knew he might face danger. But he could not have envisioned the brief, nightmare encounter that would rob him of his friend, his principles, and quite possibly his sanity. When he returns to his family in the United States, he carries with him not only survivors' guilt, but, according to a grizzled old juju man in the service of a warlord, a powerful demon.
Liz cannot understand why, precisely, she agreed to go camping with her old college friend Kevin and his sullen teenage daughter, but it was clear that in the wake of his sudden divorce and a horrific family tragedy, Kevin needed someone to lean on. The canoeing trip in the Boundary Waters was supposed to be an escape, an opportunity to bring back the old Kevin. But once in the forests, Kevin's behavior grows increasingly off-kilter, and Liz feels a growing sense of unease, one that ripens into fear. As the trio glide further into the wilderness, it becomes clear that someone, or something, is stalking them.

"Reading Chris Datta is like riding a rollercoaster. It's a fast ride filled with twists and turns. His Demon Stone is scary fun. Stephen King, watch your back!"
-Richard Rashke, author of The Killing of Karen Silkwood

"Another cracking novel from Mr Steen, his writing style is reminiscent of James Herbert. This is an engaging and gruesome novel that slowly reels you in and doesn't let go. Some moments in this story are truly eye-watering. Highly recommended to any horror fan. I think Mr. Steen has a great writing career ahead of him."

"Definitely recommend this. lots of twists and turns that keep the reader engaged. the characters gad depth and the plot was well thought out. liked his first book, loved this one!"

"Holy hell! This was horrific, but in a good way, because it feels like my soul has been sold for enjoying this.

Insanely brilliant concept of basically making deals with the devil, but you have Damian who creeps me out and still feels too real to want to defy him in real life. The way how these deals work, are also something I thought was even more tempting and very well executed.
Numerous realistic grips, very real settings and situations makes this book feel like it is your friends and family, as relatability to the characters are astoundingly well done. The details of sounds, the smells and the things around the characters throw you right in and doesn't for a second let you step out of the world created by Steen.
I loved the nurses, this has to be stated, so there it is and that's it.
The gore...oh, the beautiful gore was fantastic! I had shivers as I read particular scenes, but the most fantastic thing about it, is that it isn't just one scene and then you wish there was more. This was several scenes throughout and it made me feel evil for enjoying to read them. If I may compare...imagine the goriest video game you've played with the blood making it look like rain and then some. It was easily the best part of the book and chapter 25's last paragraph had me excited."

"I really enjoyed MarkSteens book, Demons Among Us. Jamie is hero AND the Demon that occupies his body at times committing terrible crimes is the anti -hero. This was a quick read on a plane and I didn't put it down. All parts are interesting, and I kept pulling for the goodness of Jamie to pull through over the Demon. Does he ? You will need to read it to find out. The book has several elements of emotion and it is kind of a roller coaster ride from one extreme to another, then hoping the best for the other victims. This was a page turner and written very well. I gave it a "4" because it is interesting, and fun, but not a true classic in the sense of Frankenstein, Poe's writings, ect and I want to save one star in case I encounter one. Otherwise, I would have given it a 5. This author has talent, I believe the book is priced very reasonably, so how can you pass up a fun rainy indoors day in a more satisfying day ? I am reading the Bellmore book next, by Mark Steen, that's how much I like his books and I am looking forward to more to come. Thank you !!"

DESCRIPTION:

Church officials claim demons possess Sam Charleroi, but Father Robert Malveaux isn't convinced. The disillusioned church lawyer knows his superiors are capable of manipulating a child for their own ends, especially one who's the center of the latest ecclesiastic sex-abuse scandal. To Malveaux's mind, Sam's "possession" is nothing more than psychological trauma, coupled with the stress of his parents' divorce and preexisting mental illness.
Elderly, spiritually sensitive Mae Etta doesn't share Malveaux's certainty. She remembers her childhood friend Harold's death, his bloodless skin left carefully folded. Now Sam seems connected to Harold's spirit, and a skinned corpse lies in the local jail, the remains of a guest arrested at the Charleroi estate--a fact that doesn't escape Sheriff Roger Luby.

As Luby continues his investigation and the Charleroi family threatens to implode, Malveaux struggles to differentiate between church politics and actual possession. The stakes are high. The rigors of an exorcism can kill. And if demons truly torment the child, they want Malveaux's soul.

The answer to the priest's dilemma may lie in The Caine File, an ecclesiastic text documenting demonic activity through the ages. But can the priest believe what the file contains?
