I see a book or product that I like. What do I do now?
Because our special offers often expire within a day or so after being presented on our site, the best thing to do when you find a product that you want is to click the appropriate store button in the product post as soon as you can.  All buttons that lead you to a product will state the name of the store we are sending you to.  For eBooks this will most commonly be Amazon.com, but other products may be found elsewhere.  In some cases you may find more than a single button in a product post.  This means you have your choice of stores, each named on the corresponding store button, to choose from.  It is our promise to you that our buttons will always be labeled with whichever store we are passing you on to. Unless otherwise specified, all products you purchase will be through 3rd party stores. If I purchase a product using your site, do you keep any of my personal or credit information? In all cases where you are passed to a third party store (ie, Amazon, Barnes & Noble, etc) any and all personal information that may be transferred is done strictly between you and the 3rd party.  13 Horror Street or HotZippy does not collect personal information from our users for products purchased outside of our site and we NEVER see nor capture any credit card or payment information.  In some cases we insert an affiliate code via a browser cookie which will identify our site as the origin of the potential 3rd party sale.  In these cases, HotZippy’s affiliate account may gain a small referral fee for any transaction completed on that 3rd party site.  There is no personally identifiable information contained within this cookie that isn’t already available (by your browser privacy settings) publicly and exists solely to identify our site as the referrer to the sale for any eligible commission we may be due.  If we do receive a commission for a sale, the only information we receive is that a sale has been made but that data is presented to us without any reference to a person or business that has made said purchase.

There are many means of reading Kindle books without a Kindle device.  Amazon offers free Kindle Reading Apps for most devices.  Here is a list of the apps provided directly by Amazon.  Scroll beyond these links for more information about devices not mentioned in this list.

SMARTPHONES

COMPUTERS

TABLETS

As you will notice by the links above, there is a decided lack of Kindle Reading Apps for the various “Nook” brand of tablet and e-Reader devices. One can only imagine this is of course a purposeful gesture … but there are options. Just as Amazon offers no specific Kindle app resource for the Nook, Barnes & Noble initially offered no out-of-the-box method for adding a Kindle app to their devices. However, earlier in 2013, in an effort to step up the competition against Amazon’s Kindle Fire tablet, B&N added the Google Play Store to their Nook HD and Nook HD+ tablets, which of course would make the Android TabletKindle for Android accessible to these particular Nook tablets.

Older Nook Color tablets were left out of this upgrade but there are some easily accessible products that will, by simply installing a MicroSD card into the device will automatically “root” or place a shell around the Nook Color operating system effectively turning the Nook Color into an Android tablet.  One such product that we’ve used here in our office is NOOKANDROID – 16GB Nook to Android Micro SD Card for Nook Color (BNRV200)ir?t=13horrorstreet 20&l=as2&o=1&a=B005FMKYIQ.

For other devices, specifically eReader devices (Nook, Kobo, etc) there are some products available that help you translate between eBook formats.  If for example you wish to load Kindle eBooks onto your Nook or translate all of your books in Nook format (ePub) to Kindle format (mobi), you can use an eBook management and translation software such as Calibre.  You can download this free software here. Please note that Calibre does NOT support the decoding of DRM nor the translation of DRM protected titles.

Digital rights management (DRM) is a class of controversial technologies that are used by hardware manufacturers, publishers, copyright holders, and individuals with the intent to control the use of digital content and devices after sale; there are, however, many competing definitions. With First-generation DRM software, the intent is to control copying; With Second-generation DRM, the intent is to control viewing, copying, printing and altering of works or devices. The term is also sometimes referred to as copy protection, copy prevention, and copy control, although the correctness of doing so is disputed. For more information on read the full Wikipedia entry here.

Removing or bypassing DRM protection is illegal!  While there are some products on the Web that are designed to “crack,” “strip,” or “bypass” DRM copyright protection, these tools are as highly controversial as the use of DRM itself.  However, it is the right of every content producer (musician, author, programmer) to protect their intellectual property from being freely distributed without the proper license to do so.  As a company, HotZippy LLC and its subsidiaries support the choice of artists everywhere to make this decision for themselves and will not carry nor promote any product designed to deny that choice to them.  While DRM may seem unfair to you as a consumer, the issue is not so far removed from your own life: if someone took credit for a year or more of your job or simply deducted money from your paycheck because they felt they were entitled to your work without paying you for the time and effort spent, you could find your position on this matter much different than you might now.  We ask all our customers, affiliates and friends to consider the artist when debating DRM.  Books don’t write themselves.

Can you help me resolve a sale that I made in error on a 3rd party site? No.  Unfortunately all purchases made between the buyer and the seller are ruled and settled by the terms of the purchase itself and thereby must be negotiated within that contract.  13 Horror Street or HotZippy LLC cannot intervene on either party’s behalf once a service has been rendered or a product has been sold outside our site.  Use common sense and best practices when completing purchases through 3rd party sites. Can you teach me how to use my new device? No.  Unfortunately due to the wide variety of possible devices that can be used to access the material we promote it is unfeasible for us to be able to provide training or troubleshooting for devices.  You should refer to any troubleshooting documentation or support outlets provided by the manufacturer of your specific device.

We can provide troubleshooting or exploratory services if you are experiencing technical issues with the usage of our site.  Please use our CONTACT FORM to tell us about any issue you are experiencing. Why are some of these books free? What’s wrong with them?Authors often times will make one or more of their titles free to consumers in an effort to gain new readers or to promote a title in a series they have written.  To answer the question: nothing.  These are the same titles authors sell for full price or are priced at $0.00 as a regular price (known as ‘permafree’).I was offended by an item promoted on your site. What do I do?The first thing to do is take a deep breath and relax.  It is highly unlikely that anyone has promoted an item that was specifically designed to offend you.

If the content that offended you was in a book, consider writing the author or leaving a review of the title on the appropriate product’s web page.  For instance, on an Amazon book page.

If the offense was due to poor quality or workmanship you should write a review of the product as mentioned above, and you can also write us to make us aware (CONTACT FORM) of the issue you encountered and we’ll keep that on record for feedback to the author or manufacturer.

If you were offended by a product image on our site you can let us know about it, but there are two things to keep in mind.  The first is that you need to remember what type of site you are on.  If horror themes and images offend you, perhaps you should not be frequenting 13 Horror Street.  Secondly, when communicating with us, please be respectful.  While we care about all of our customers, our services are provided to you free of charge and offending you was not our intent.  Treating our staff poorly is not something we will tolerate. My friend wrote a horror novel. Will you put it on your site?If your friend’s book is published in Kindle format, you can direct your friend to our Advertise With Us page for more information on being featured.  You can also choose to promote your friend’s title as well by purchasing a promotion on their behalf–just be sure to inform us you are NOT the author when you submit our order form. Will this site have a community area such as a forum where horror fans can meet and talk about their favorite scary things?13 Horror Street may have its own community in the future.  Our parent company, HotZippy LLC may also provide a horror-themed community site in the near future which we may choose to merge with for interested users.I REALLY REALLY like your site and want to help keep it going. Do you accept donations? At this time we do not accept donations but we do appreciate your enthusiasm.  If you really want to help us out here are a few things you can do:

      1. Purchase products we promote
      2. Spread the word about our site anywhere and everywhere you can think of
      3. Fund a promotional giveaway
      4. Fund an author promotion or contest
